Attorney Profile

Thomas E. "Tommy" Pope is a managing partner with Elrod Pope Law Firm, based in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Mr. Pope focuses on personal injury and medical malpractice cases, and he is most often recognized for his prosecution of Susan Smith, who was accused of drowning her two children. This 1995 case in Union County, South Carolina, made national headlines. He frequently brings his 30-plus years of prosecution and law enforcement experience to national and international media outlets as a commentator on cases involving parents who are accused of crimes similar to Smith's.

Mr. Pope received a bachelor's degree from the University of South Carolina School of Business in 1984 and obtained his Juris Doctor from the University of South Carolina in 1987, and he was an honors graduate from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy. He subsequently served as solicitor for the 16th Circuit in Union and York counties from 1993 to 2006. During this time, the 16th Circuit led the state in caseload management by conducting timely and effective prosecution of criminal cases.

Mr. Pope is a member of the South Carolina Bar Association and the York County Bar Association. He is admitted to the U.S. Supreme Court and the Federal District Court. He is Speaker Pro Tempore of the South Carolina House of Representatives and serves the 47th District.

In 2008, he received South Carolina's highest civilian honor, the Order of the Palmetto, for his dedication and service to fellow residents. He was recognized by the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce as a recipient of the Business Advocate Award in 2011 and received the Business Champion Award in 2017. Tommy was selected by the American Legion of South Carolina as the 2012 Legislator of the Year.

Tommy was also selected to the South Carolina Super Lawyers list from 2013 to 2017. This prestigious honor is awarded to less than five percent of South Carolina lawyers. Selection is based on outstanding lawyers who have attained a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement.  He was an honoree for the South Carolina Lawyers Weekly’s Leadership in Law Award in March of 2014 and named the 2014 Legislator of the Year by both the Adult Education Directors Division South Carolina Association of School Administrators and South Carolina Recreation and Parks Association.  In 2014, Pope was also selected as the Lawyer Legislator Committee Chair. In 2016, Pope was chosen as Legislator of the Year by The Sheriff's Association and also became a Graduate of Leadership S.C.
