She earned her J.D. from the University of South Dakota School of Law in 1995, serving as a teaching assistant and editor-in-chief of the South Dakota Law Review. That same year, she was admitted to the State Bar of South Dakota and launched her legal career as a clerk for the Honorable Roger L. Wollman on the United States Court of Appeals for the 8th Circuit.
