David W. Garrett, partner at Garrett | Talley & Thorington in Franklin, Tennessee, is widely recognized as one of the leading family law attorneys in Middle Tennessee. With nearly 40 years of experience, he focuses his practice on complex, high-asset divorce matters, including those involving the entertainment industry and cases requiring business valuation and division. His practice also encompasses prenuptial and postnuptial agreements, custody issues and mediation, where he is a Rule 31 listed mediator who helps parties resolve disputes before trial. Known for his depth of knowledge and steady approach, he is frequently sought after for his ability to handle sensitive and high-stakes family law matters.
A Franklin native, Mr. Garrett attended Battle Ground Academy, where he later served six years on the Board of Trustees. He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Tennessee, where he was a noted campus leader, received a Chancellor’s Citation for Extraordinary Campus Leadership and was honored as a Torchbearer, the highest recognition given to an undergraduate. He earned his law degree from Cumberland School of Law at Samford University, where he served as articles editor for the American Journal of Trial Advocacy.
Mr. Garrett is deeply involved in the Middle Tennessee legal community. He has served two terms as chair of the Nashville Bar Association’s Continuing Education Committee and is a frequent speaker at continuing legal education seminars on family law topics.
In addition to his legal practice, Mr. Garrett has played a major role in preserving Franklin’s heritage. As president and later chair of the Heritage Foundation of Williamson County, he led successful efforts to raise millions for projects including the restoration of the Franklin Theatre and the development of Franklin Grove. For his contributions, he has received the Patron’s Award from the Heritage Foundation and Franklin Tomorrow’s Anne T. Rutherford Exemplary Community Volunteer Award.
