Attorney Profile

Upon graduating from the University of Missouri-Columbia, I was fortunate to work in Washington, DC on Capitol Hill as a staffer for Albert Gore, Jr. while he was in the House, Senate, and as a national presidential candidate in 1988.  This legislative experience was of great benefit to me when I entered and completed law school.  Upon earning my law degree, I was fortunate to complete an Externship at the US Attorney's Office in the Western District of Tennessee and was offered a job with the INS through the Justice Department's Honor Law Graduate program as a Trial Attorney in the INS Office of the District Counsel in Los Angeles, CA.  After gaining extremely valuable experience and insight regarding Immigration Law from the government's standpoint, I decided to enter private practice in Los Angeles and then New York City metropolitan area.  In May 1994, I returned to my hometown of Memphis, TN and began my private practice. I have always experienced a profound sense of satisfaction in utilizing my law degree to help people address their immigration issues. My practice developed from being a sole practitioner to a firm of over 15 employees in two cities.  I have traveled abroad and helped clients at many US Embassies and Consulates abroad.  I have appeared in Immigration Courts across the United States and it is a source of great personal satisfaction that clients have such confidence in my ability to resolve their issues that they consider it worthwhile having me travel outside of Tennessee on their behalf. In the final analysis, it is about winning cases on behalf of one's clients, and I have triumphed in countless cases where other lawyers, with less experience and finesse, may not have been successful.  Within the field of Immigration Law, I have developed a broad network of lawyers to help me with Immigration cases nationwide.  Many of these associates are experts in specific areas of Immigration law and have become not only my friends but my mentors in those areas.  I have invited a number of these associates to speak at the Federal Bar Association Annual Immigration CLE, which I coordinated over the 15 year period when it was held in Memphis.  At the suggestion of the Immigration Court, we used this program, in the early 2000's, as a way to share knowledge and expertise with newer practitioners in the immigration legal field.  I firmly believe that part of being a great lawyer is maintaining the humility to always be open to learn from others.  While I know that I do not know everything in my field, I am constantly reaching out to learn and grow and expand my expertise in Immigration Law, and it is precisely for that reason that I feel confident to serve as a mentor to others.  It is very satisfying to hear clients I have had in the past 25+ years remind me how the work we did for their family has changed their lives in such meaningful ways.
