At Slack Davis Sanger LLP in Austin, Texas, John R. Davis spearheads the firm's class action and whistleblower initiatives. His career has largely unfolded within the corridors of U.S. federal courts, where he navigates the intricacies of complex litigation, zeroing in on issues such as consumer and health care fraud, antitrust, environmental challenges, and insurance disputes. His mission is to ensure that companies are held responsible for their misconduct.
Mr. Davis' academic journey began at Trinity University, where he earned a B.A. with honors, including the Trustees Scholarship, a spot on the Dean’s List and National French Honors. He continued to hone his legal acumen at Boston College Law School, obtaining his J.D. He is authorized to practice law in Texas, California, Louisiana and Alabama.
Before his tenure at Slack Davis Sanger LLP, Mr. Davis refined his skills during two years as a judicial law clerk for federal judges, followed by three years at a renowned class action and environmental law firm in New Orleans. These roles enriched his understanding of federal court litigation, particularly in areas such as pharmaceutical antitrust, RICO class actions and environmental damage cases.
In his notable roles, Mr. Davis acted as court-appointed class counsel in a federal class action against Farmers Group, Inc., tackling issues of premium discrimination affecting around 700,000 policyholders. The case, Grigson v. Farmers Group, Inc., culminated in June 2020 with a class settlement of $52 million, including attorneys fees and costs and the distribution of awards is nearly complete. Among his other significant cases, he was chosen for the Plaintiffs’ Executive Committee in the Valsartan Products Liability Litigation, a major pharmaceutical case concerning contaminated blood pressure medication taken by millions of Americans.
A respected figure in the legal community, Mr. Davis actively participates in various associations, including the American Association for Justice, the Texas Trial Lawyers Association, the American Bar Association, the State Bar of Texas, The State Bar of California, the Alabama State Bar, the Louisiana State Bar Association and the Austin Bar Association. His work was spotlighted in New Orleans CityBusiness Magazine's “Law Firms: Ones to Watch” in 2014, showcasing his impact and dedication.
