Hershel Robert Chapin serves as managing attorney of H. R. Chapin, Attorney & Counselor, PLLC, in Dallas, Texas, where he combines an unwavering commitment to client service with a passionate defense of the integrity of our legal institutions. He represents both secured and unsecured creditors in every phase of state, bankruptcy, and federal litigation and counsels creditors’ rights in complex debt collection matters.
On the debtor side, Mr. Chapin advocates for individuals and businesses in Chapter 7 and Chapter 11 proceedings, guiding clients through asset evaluation, claim management and courtroom advocacy. His commercial practice spans business and real estate disputes, including commercial and construction litigation, creditor-debtor mediation services, mortgage and foreclosure actions, landlord-tenant controversies and appellate work. In addition, he advises clients on employment law issues, corporate formation, mergers and acquisitions, dissolutions, and consumer litigation, and he assists debt purchasers in navigating compliance with federal and state regulatory regimes.
Mr. Chapin’s impressive academic journey helped shape the sharp legal skills he brings to his work. In 2010, he graduated from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge with pro bono honors, earning both a J.D. from the Paul M. Hebert Law Center and a D.C.L. graduate diploma in civil law. Before law school, he completed two bachelor’s degrees with honors at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, finishing in the top 15 percent of his class. At SMU, he earned a B.A. in finance with honors from the Cox School of Business and a B.A. in French through the university honors program at Dedman College of Humanities and Sciences.
Admitted to the State Bar of Texas since November 2010, Mr. Chapin is in good standing before all Texas state courts and the U.S. District and Bankruptcy Courts for the Northern, Eastern, Southern and Western Districts of Texas. He is also admitted to practice in the U.S. 5th Circuit Court of Appeals. A frequent speaker on creditor-debtor issues, he was featured at the Dallas Bar Association’s CLE program in October 2020, presenting “How to Bankruptcy-Proof Your State Court Money Judgment.”
