Verdicts/Settlements

  • On appeal: the Dallas Court of Appeals reversed the judgment of conviction and sentence against my client and--in an exceedingly rare move--rendered a verdict of acquittal. Harper v. State, 05-19-00343-CR (Tex. App.--Dallas, July 16, 2020, no pet.), 2020
  • On appeal: The judgment of conviction and sentences of 20 years in prison in each of two cases of aggravated assault against client were VACATED and the causes DISMISSED after the Fifth District Court of Appeals in Dallas agreed with Appellant's argument that the trial court abused its discretion in transferring Appellant from juvenile to the criminal district court for adult criminal proceedings in these cases. As a result, the trial court lacked jurisdiction to enter judgment against Appellant. The adult cases were dismissed, the cases remained pending in juvenile court. Davis v. State, 05-16-01341-CR/05-16-01342-CR (Tex. App.--Dallas July 31, 2018, no pet.), 2018
  • No Bill: After work on case and submission of defense packet, the grand jury declined to indict my client who was the focus of a sexual assault inquiry, 2020
  • Trial: Injury to child case dismissed at pretrial, 2019
  • Trial: Indictment based on sexual assault claim by spouse dismissed at pretrial, 2018
  • On appeal: Judgment of Conviction and prison sentence of 24 years was reversed by the Dallas Court of Appeals. The case was remanded to the trial court with an order to dismiss the indictment against my client with prejudice due to State's violation of the Interstate Agreement on Detainer's Act. State appealed to the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, who granted review. After oral arguments, the Court ruled that review had been improvidently granted--leaving the opinion of the intermediate court intact. Mandate was issued early upon Defense motion and client was released from prison. Cahill v. State, 05-15-00577-CR (Tex. App.--Dallas, June 14, 2016, pet. dism'd as improv. granted), 2016

Honors/Awards

  • D Magazine is proud to annually honor exceptional lawyers in our May issue. The attorneys on our Best Lawyers list are peer-nominated on the basis that they offer unparalleled counsel in one of 40 categories. These are members of the legal community representing the people and institutions of Dallas with mastery and drive.   "To compile our list of the best lawyers, we ask lawyers with a valid Texas Bar number to nominate two lawyers outside their firm and one within their firm across all voting categories, keeping the following question in mind: “Which local lawyers, of those whose work you have witnessed firsthand, would you rank among the current best? Answers may include co-counsel, lawyers you have observed in court, and opposing counsel.” After the votes are tallied, a panel of eminent lawyers will meet with our editors to evaluate the Best Lawyers 2020 list. Self-nominations will not count. The panel’s anonymity is assured to allow the lawyers to speak freely about issues regarding their peers that would be known only to the legal community."
