Charles McFarland is the founder of McFarland PLLC, located in Houston, Texas. With a practice exclusively focused on condemnation and eminent domain, Charles represents landowners who are seeking just compensation after the government takes private land for public use. The majority of his cases involve highway construction projects, which raise complex legal issues of public infrastructure, real estate, and transportation. He represents clients throughout Texas.
After graduating with honors from The University of Texas at Austin, where he was a National Merit Scholar and a Presidential Achievement Scholar, Charles earned his law degree from The University of Texas School of Law. He is admitted to practice in all Texas state courts and is board certified in Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He became board certified trying condemnation cases.
Charles enjoys sharing his legal knowledge with others. He is frequently asked to speak about eminent domain issues at professional events and has written articles about property rights for several legal publications, including the American Bar Association's Litigation Journal.
Reflecting the respect he enjoys in the legal community, Charles received the highest possible rating, that of AV Preeminent* from the peer-review service Martindale-Hubbell. He has also been listed as one of the top eminent domain and condemnation law attorneys in the publication "Best Lawyers in America."**
Mr. McFarland is active in a number of professional and community organizations. He is a former president of the Texas Association of Civil Trial and Appellate Specialists and is the Texas Member of Owners' Counsel of America, a longtime network of the nation's leading eminent domain and property rights attorneys. In 2019, he received the CRE designation and is a member of the Counselors of Real Estate, a worldwide organization of trusted advisors devoted to finding solutions to complex real estate challenges.
*AV-Preeminent and BV-Distinguished are certification marks of Reed Elsevier Properties Inc., used in accordance with the Martindale-Hubbell certification procedures, standards and policies. Martindale-Hubbell is the facilitator of a peer review rating process. Ratings reflect the confidential opinions of members of the Bar and the judiciary.
