Maria E. Holmes is one of the most sought-after attorneys in Houston due to her comprehensive understanding of a diverse range of legal matters encompassing family law, personal injury law and criminal defense law. An associate attorney at The Buzbee Law Firm, located in Texas, she currently represents injured individuals around Galveston, Southeast Texas and Houston in several courts across the state.
Ms. Holmes is a native of Houston and is fluent in both English and Spanish. She moved to Massachusetts to pursue her undergraduate studies at Smith College in Northampton. With a major in American studies and a minor in government, she graduated in 2008 with her bachelor’s degree. After finishing her studies, she returned to her home state of Texas to attend St. Mary’s University School of Law and secured a Doctor of Jurisprudence in 2013.
During her time at the law school, Ms. Holmes was very active in various student and local organizations and held leadership positions within these groups. She served as the president of the Black Law Students Association and was a board member of the Hispanic Law Students Association. Her unwavering commitment to pro bono work earned her the Pro Bono Award and she also received the 2013 Congressman Henry B. Gonzalez Scholarship. Not only was she a diligent student, but she also focused on gaining valuable experience by working as a clerk for the Honorable Judge Jason Pulliam.
Prior to joining The Buzbee Law Firm, Ms. Holmes led the family department at a prominent Texas-based law firm, overseeing and handling several hundred cases for more than two and a half years. She later joined another firm as an associate attorney, where she focused mainly on strategizing and litigating cases involving family law.
Ms. Holmes is an eminent member of the state’s legal community and holds active memberships in multiple professional organizations, including the Houston Bar Association and the State Bar of Texas’ African American Lawyers Section and the Women and the Law Section.
