Murtaza Sutarwalla

As a co-founder and partner at Edwards Sutarwalla Samani LLP in Houston, Texas, Murtaza Sutarwalla brings over 18 years of seasoned legal experience. His practice encompasses the full spectrum of business law, with a focus on business and civil litigation, corporate structuring, complex commercial transactions, and serving as outside general counsel. He also manages personal injury and estate planning cases.

Rooted in Houston yet enriched by years spent overseas, Mr. Sutarwalla completed a unique academic journey, combining Business Honors/MIS with Asian American Studies at the University of Texas at Austin before advancing to earn a law degree at the University of Chicago Law School. His career began as a corporate lawyer with an American multinational law firm in Washington, D.C., and Dubai before moving to a British multinational law firm in the Middle East.

Licensed in Texas since 2006 and the District of Columbia since 2007, Mr. Sutarwalla is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 5th Circuit, the U.S. District Courts for the Southern, Western, Eastern and Northern Districts of Texas and the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan. Beyond his private practice, he recently functioned as deputy attorney general for legal counsel at the Texas Office of the Attorney General (OAG). There, he guided as chief counsel and oversaw various civil legal divisions.

While at the OAG, Mr. Sutarwalla managed the state's commercial and charitable trust litigation docket, co-authored over 50 Texas AG Opinions and advised on disaster response. He also testified before The Texas State Senate and House and led attorney recruitment and development. Active in the legal community, he is a member of the Texas Blazers Alumni Association, the Muslim Bar Association of Houston and the Houston Trial Lawyers Association. He is also fluent in Arabic, Spanish, Urdu and Gujarati.
