Mr. Barrera holds a B.A. in economics from Baylor University, obtained in 1989. His career began in management at West Bend de Mexico, a maquiladora. Pursuing further education, he joined The University of Texas–Pan American MBA program in 1990 and, subsequently, law school at Texas Southern University in 1991. By 1994, Mr. Barrera had graduated with both a Master of Business Administration and a Juris Doctorate, ranking in the top 11 percent of his class. During law school, he clerked at the Texas Supreme Court and served as articles editor of the Thurgood Marshall Law Review. His academic achievements include induction into the Phi Delta Phi Legal Honor Society.
Since 1997, Mr. Barrera has been the managing partner at Barrera, Sanchez & Associates, P.C. Additionally, he has held the role of municipal court judge for McAllen since 2016, appointed by the city's commission.
Mr. Barrera's contributions extend beyond his legal practice. He has held leadership roles such as his two-term service on the Texas Young Lawyers Association Board of Directors, representing Hidalgo, Cameron and Webb counties.
