Scholarly Lectures / Writings
- As a plaintiff’s trial lawyer, I am convinced that one of the most powerful tools of persuasion is knowing and understanding our clients and being able to communicate the humanity of their stories. This is achieved by spending the necessary time with our clients and connecting on a human level. Looking them in the eyes, listening to their stories, reflecting on their struggles and victories, laughing, smiling, and yes, even shedding tears together. This is one of our most powerful tools of persuasion before a jury, mediator, arbitrator and insurance adjuster. The one factor the defense fears the most is the human factor. And for me, the most gratifying part of what I do and who I am as a plaintiff’s trial lawyer, President's Message, The Human Factor, Utah Trial Journal, Personal Injury, Trial, Trial Lawyer, 2024
- As plaintiffs’ lawyers we have an incredible opportunity and power to affect positive life lasting changes in our clients’ lives. We are the voice of the client, a victim of harm and injustice, telling the human story to a jury and holding corporations and the powerful insurance industry accountable. Yet, with this comes the weight and responsibility which, at times, can be all consuming, causing us to question ourselves, career choice, and identity. By attending to our physical and mental health (for me that is waking up every day with a full eight hours of sleep in the tank), by reflecting daily on the rare honor and privilege to be another’s champion, by continually developing trial skills and honing our craft in order to affect positive change in our clients’ lives, we can approach every day with renewed perspective and say, “Wow. What a view. I am so fortunate to do what I do in such a beautiful place.”, President's Message, Waking and Walking in Gratitude, Utah Trial Journal, Legal, Trial Lawyers, Personal Injury, 2024
- What our UAJ Legislative Committee and lobbyists accomplish, year in and year out, is nothing short of Herculean. Yet, our continued success on the legislative hill, and as an organization, is only possible with the robust support of our dedicated membership. Hence, I gently urge you, if you are so kind to read this President’s Message and our legislative update, to consider participating in UAJ’s legislative efforts. My participation in the UAJ has not only been a highlight of my legal career, but an invaluable opportunity to make a difference beyond the four corners of my legal practice (e.g., H.B. 258)., President's Message, Making a Difference, Utah Trial Journal, Trial Lawyers, Personal Injury, Legal, 2024
- Gratitude. That one word best describes how I feel about this 2019 legislative session because the UAJ had its most successful year, to date, up on the hill. This gratitude extends to each and every legislative committee member who donated countless hours of personal time to making 2019 a ground-breaking year, co-author, 2019 Legislative Wrap-Up, Utah Trial Journdal, VOLUME 42, NO. 2, SPRING 2019, Utah Association For Justice, 2019
