Details

Katharine has extensive experience in all areas of family law from handling complex custody matters to unique property divisions as well as support matters.  Katharine is passionate about her career - she does not create family law disputes, but she enjoys being part of the solution and advocating on behalf of her clients. Ideally family matters are resolved outside of litigation where both parties agree to a solution; unfortunately, settlement is not always possible.  Katharine is a strong advocate both in negotiating settlements as well as litigating before judges when the parties are not able to agree upon settlement terms.  Katharine is a litigator, a Virginia Supreme Court certified mediator, and she also practices Collaborative Law.

Katharine is a Fellow of the distinguished American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers as well as a Fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers (IAFL), where she serves as a Vice President of the US Chapter of the IAFL.  Katharine is also a Diplomate of the American College of Family Trial Lawyers (ACFTL), which according to the ACFTL is a “group consisting of the top 100 family law trial lawyers in the country.  Fellowship is extended by invitation only to those who have mastered the art of advocacy and whose careers exemplify the highest standards of ethical conduct, professionalism, civility and collegiately. Fellowship is limited to those who are regarded as the best in their state.”

Katharine has lectured on family law issues both domestically as well as internationally.  Katharine has also published several articles related to Virginia family law matters and co-authored the Virginia chapter of an international treatise on family law.  Katharine has been selected as a "Super Lawyer" by Super Lawyers Magazine and as a "Top Lawyer" by Northern Virginia Magazine.  She has also been recognized as one of the top lawyers in the field of family law by Virginia Business Magazine and she has received the top rating possible, "Superb, 10 out of 10" from the AVVO ratings website.

Raised in Virginia, Katharine attended the University of Virginia and obtained a Bachelor of Arts in psychology. She then pursued her legal studies at The George Washington University Law School and received her Juris Doctor with honors.  While there, Ms. Maddox was the chair of the school's Committee on Academic Integrity.
