Joe DiPietro is a seasoned litigator and appellate advocate with a proven track record of handling complex family law cases. His areas of expertise include divorce, high-conflict custody disputes, property division, spousal support, post-divorce modifications, enforcement actions, and international parental abduction claims which fall under the Hague Convention on the Civil Aspects of International Child Abduction and the International Child Abduction Remedies Act.
Joe has represented clients in various appellate courts including serving as counsel for amici curiae in the United States Supreme Court. Known for his professional and level-headed approach, Joe skillfully addresses the challenging legal and emotional issues his clients face, consistently achieving excellent results.
With a deep understanding of the destructive consequences family conflict can impose, and his well-developed technical expertise, Joe excels in both settlement negotiations and courtroom advocacy. He is committed to resolving cases through negotiation and mediation whenever possible, believing that customized, private solutions preserve family relationships—especially with children—and optimize asset division. When litigation is necessary, Joe is a highly skilled trial attorney, prepared to advocate aggressively for his clients’ best interests.
Joe’s financial acumen is particularly valuable in cases involving complex equitable distribution, such as tracing separate assets, dividing business and professional partnership interests, and handling executive compensation issues. He collaborates effectively with valuation experts and crafts compelling legal arguments for even the most entangled financial disputes.
Before entering private practice, Joe served as a Judicial Law Clerk for the late Hon. Michael J. Stamm of the Circuit Court for St. Mary’s County, Maryland, and worked at a law firm in Washington, D.C.
Joe is deeply engaged in his community and maintains an active pro bono practice. He has served on the Board of Directors for the Alexandria Bar Association, the Latino Student Fund, and the Bethesda Lacrosse Association. He is a member of Leadership Greater Washington’s Class of 2019. Joe currently serves as Co-Chair of the Child Support Committee for the American Bar Association’s Family Law Section.
