Jim Hurley is a founding partner of Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers based in Norfolk, Virginia. He focuses exclusively on personal injury matters, representing people injured in Norfolk, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News, the Eastern Shore of Virginia and across Virginia as a whole.
Jim Hurley’s main areas of practice are car, truck, and motorcycle accidents as well as wrongful death cases. Over his career, Jim Hurley has tried more than 100 cases and has obtained several verdicts and settlements for his clients in excess of $1 million.
After graduating from the University of Arizona with a Bachelor of Arts, Jim Hurley attended Thomas M. Cooley Law School, where he received his Juris Doctor in 1990. He was admitted to practice before state courts in Virginia and Florida. He was also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia. Jim Hurley is highly regarded by his peers. He has received an AV-Preeminent* rating from Martindale-Hubbell and an "Excellent" rating from Avvo. He is recognized by Virginia Super Lawyers.
Jim Hurley set up Cooper Hurley Injury Lawyers with John Cooper in 2011. The firm has grown rapidly but retained its local roots and its determination to treat its clients ‘like family’ in contrast to the big factory personal injury firms.
Jim Hurley helped secure a $5 million settlement reached during mediation of a construction truck accident and a $3.5 million settlement of a wrongful death action involving a motor vehicle accident. These results and others have earned him a membership in the invitation-only Million Dollar Advocates Forum.
Jim Hurley is listed in The National Trial Lawyers: Top 100. He continues to stay abreast of developments in his field through his active participation in several professional organizations. He is a member of the Virginia Beach and Norfolk & Portsmouth bar associations. He is a member of the Virginia Trial Lawyers Association and the American Association for Justice.
*AV Preeminent and BV Distinguished are certification marks of Reed Elsevier Properties Inc., used in accordance with the Martindale-Hubbell certification procedures, standards and policies. Martindale-Hubbell is the facilitator of a peer review rating process. Ratings reflect the confidential opinions of members of the bar and the judiciary. Martindale-Hubbell ratings fall into two categories: legal ability and general ethical standards.
