John K. Karanian is Executive Vice-President at Richmond, Virginia-based Barnes & Diehl, P.C. Focusing his practice on family law matters since becoming an attorney, he provides advice and counsel to people in the Richmond-Petersburg metropolitan area whose marriages are coming to an end and who are having to deal with such divorce-related issues as alimony, the division of marital assets and debts, and child custody and visitation. Other family law cases that Mr. Karanian has handled have included the preparation and review of prenuptial and post-marital agreements, adoptions, the modification to and enforcement of existing divorce orders, and the obtaining of protective orders for clients who have been the victims of domestic abuse. He also has a background in defending clients against misdemeanor and felony charges.
Mr. Karanian majored in psychology at Georgetown University and received a Bachelor of Arts in 1992. He then enrolled at the University of Hartford and eventually earned his Doctor of Psychology in 1997. Mr. Karanian spent the following three years in the clinical psychology field, including a one-year stint with the Central Intelligence Agency. He then decided to pursue his legal education at the University of Richmond School of Law, and he was awarded his Juris Doctor in 2004.
Admitted to practice in Virginia, Mr. Karanian has been with Barnes & Diehl, P.C., since graduation, and he became a shareholder in 2013. He has been asked to deliver presentations on various family law topics to groups of fellow professionals, with subjects, including child custody evaluations, sexual abuse in family law cases and selecting a qualified child custody expert. Mr. Karanian's professional affiliations include the Family Law Section of the Virginia State Bar.
