John McKnight is the co-chair of the whistleblower and qui tam practice group at Sanford Heisler Sharp McKnight, LLP, in Washington, D.C. Practicing nationwide, he represents corporate whistleblowers exposing securities fraud, banking misconduct, government contract procurement fraud and corporate malfeasance. Also handling sensitive wrongful discharge and discrimination cases for high-level executives, he brings strategic, high-stakes advocacy to complex enforcement and employment matters.
Earning his bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, Mr. McKnight went on to obtain a Master of Fine Arts from The New School. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of Maryland Francis King Carey School of Law. He further honed his legal acumen through judicial internships at both the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia and the Superior Court of the District of Columbia, gaining vital insights into federal and local judicial operations.
For Mr. McKnight, impactful legal research requires looking past an industry’s official narrative to understand how it actually functions, who it serves and what internal pressures shape it. Qui tam and whistleblower work rewards exactly this deep analytical approach. Because cases often begin with a client who only holds a single piece of a larger story, the job becomes one of meticulous forensic reconstruction, searching for evidence buried within layered corporate records.
Recognizing the immense personal and professional stakes involved, Mr. McKnight approaches each case with a strict priority on communication and tailored litigation strategies. He reads thousands of corporate documents and internal emails with the rigorous attention of someone who knows the true meaning is often found in what is left unsaid. This highly individualized, strategic focus ensures that vulnerable whistleblowers are fully protected while their evidence is powerfully leveraged to expose systemic corporate wrongdoing.
