Melvin L. Brooks is a Managing Partner at the law office of The Cochran Firm-Chicago. He previously served as a partner at the firm of James D. Montgomery & Associates, Ltd. Mr. Brooks dedicates his practice to protecting the rights of citizens who have been harmed or injured by representing their interests in wrongful death and serious personal injury cases. He has obtained more than $40 million in personal injury verdicts and settlements for his clients since focusing his practice on civil litigation. His list of high-profile cases included having served as lead counsel in the E2 Nightclub litigation. Through the efforts of Mr. Brooks, over $20 million was recovered for families of the victims.  He also represented the family of a young lady, Rekia Boyd, who was fatally shot by an off-duty, Chicago ploice officer and successfully obtained an award of $4.5 million.

After earning a Bachelor of Arts from Iowa State University of Science and Technology in 1982, Mr. Brooks went on to earn a law degree from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1985. That same year, the state of Illinois approved him to practice law in its courtrooms.

Prior to joining his current firm, Mr. Brooks served as Deputy Corporation Counsel for the City of Chicago where he handled complex, mulit-million dollar exposure cases. His litigation skills were highlighted by the The National Law Journal whch included Mr. Brooks' successful defense of the City in the case of Sanders v. City among the top 15 defense verdicts in 1997. The experience which he gained in this position he now uses from the other side of the courtroom to the benefit of his clients.

Thanks to his extensive knowledge and long record of success, Mr. Brooks has earned the respect of the legal community. As a result of that respect, he has earned various honors and awards, including an "Excellent" rating from Avvo and a BV Distinguished peer review rating* from Martindale-Hubbell. In addition, the Cook County Bar Association chose him as the recipient of its Harold Washington Award in 2012 for his service to the community.

Mr. Brooks is an active member of the legal community. He is currently a member of several legal organizations, including the Cook County Bar Association and the Illinois Trial Lawyers Association.
