After emigrating from Iran and Germany to the U.S. with his family, Alen pursued higher education degrees and received his Bachelor of Arts in Economics from The University of Chicago (2002) and his Juris Doctor from UIC John Marshall Law School (2007). In law school, he served as a Federal Judicial Extern for the Honorable Samuel Der-Yeghiayan of the Northern District of Illinois and as the Candidacy Editor for the UIC John Marshall Journal of Computer and Information Law.
Alen serves on the boards of Heartland Alliance International and the National Immigrant Justice Center, two not-for-profit organizations under Heartland Alliance dedicated to providing housing, healthcare, jobs, justice, and immigration services to those in need. Alen is also a volunteer attorney with the UIC JMLS International Human Rights Clinic and the Moran Center for Youth Advocacy.
Alen is proficient in Aramaic, Farsi, German and English. He enjoys spending time with his family and two dogs, Misiu and Piper, as well as public speaking, marathons, triathlons, and fishing.
