A partner at Gillespie & Murphy, P.A., J. Allen Murphy focuses his practice exclusively on consumer bankruptcy matters. With offices in New Bern, Wilmington, Greenville and Jacksonville, he provides debt relief assistance to people throughout the eastern part of North Carolina. Admitted to practice before all North Carolina state courts, Mr. Murphy is also admitted to practice before the U.S. District Courts for the Eastern, Middle and Western Districts of North Carolina, the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of North Carolina, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 4th Circuit, and the Supreme Court of the United States. Highly respected by his colleagues, he has received a Distinguished* peer review rating through Martindale-Hubbell.
Mr. Murphy's experience encompasses several chapters of the U.S. Bankruptcy Code. He has helped numerous clients have many of their outstanding unsecured debt balances discharged through the completion of a Chapter 7 bankruptcy, and he has assisted others who have a regular source of income reorganize their obligations pursuant to a court-approved plan filed pursuant to Chapter 13. Mr. Murphy also helps family farmers and commercial fishermen restructure their debts under Chapter 12.
A North Carolina native, Mr. Murphy is a 1982 graduate of East Carolina University in Greenville, where he majored in political science and received a Bachelor of Arts with honors. His legal education came at North Carolina Central University School of Law in Durham, and he served on the North Carolina Central Law Review before being awarded his Juris Doctor magna cum laude in 1985. Reflecting his devotion to his faith, Mr. Murphy is a member of the Christian Legal Society and several other Christian organizations, and his professional memberships include the North Carolina Advocates for Justice. He co-founded his current firm in 1991.
