She immediately joined the 14th Judicial District Office of Public Defender, Durham, where she worked for eight years before entering private practice. 

A leader in her legal community, Ms. Powers currently serves as Trial Advocacy and AAJ Trial Team Coach at the North Carolina Central University School of Law, and she has facilitated classes and conducted lectures and seminars at Strayer University as well as the UNC School of Government. She is an active member of the National Black Lawyer's Association and the North Carolina Bar Association, among her other professional affiliations.
