Attorney Profile

In his 30-plus years as a lawyer, D. Douglas “Doug” Brothers has secured numerous substantial awards for clients in a wide range of matters, from complex commercial litigation to intellectual property and professional liability litigation. Doug represents both plaintiffs and defendants, and most recently has seen tremendous success in his fiduciary litigation practice.

Last year, Doug helped a litigation trustee in the Crescent Resources LLC bankruptcy recover a substantial amount in a $1.2 billion fraudulent transfer claim against Duke Energy, the largest electric power holding company in the United States. Also in 2014, Doug led efforts to successfully defend the San Antonio Water System against a $100 million bond validation suit filed by the Guadalupe-Blanco River Authority. A loss in the case would have curtailed some of San Antonio’s water rights. Also on the defense side, Doug has successfully represented on an ongoing basis a high-rise design builder, banking institutions, real estate developers and insurers.

Doug’s other practice areas include trade secret litigation, confidentiality and noncompete agreement litigation, legal malpractice, and accounting and auditing malpractice. Recognized for his accomplishments by numerous organizations, Doug was recently inducted into the American College of Trial Lawyers, one of the nation’s premier legal associations.

Doug has taken four cases to the Supreme Court of Texas and represented clients in at least 16 cases before the Texas Courts of Appeals. He also has handled several appeals before the 5th U.S.Circuit Court of Appeals.

Since 2008, Doug has been selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America© for Bet-the-Company Litigation, Commercial Litigation, and Legal Malpractice. He was named Best of the Bar for Civil Litigators by the Austin Business Journal in 2003.

Doug is Board Certified in Civil Trial Law by the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. He received his law degree with honors from the University of Texas School of Law in 1981 and earned his B.A. magna cum laude from Amherst College in 1978.
